Understanding Sensitivity to Light

The truth is we are all sensitive to light. Special cells in our eyes, separate from the rods and cones that our eyes use to see, tell our brains if light is too bright. These cells are why we respond by squinting our eyes after heading outside on a bright day after being in a movie theater.

But others have more extreme and oftentimes chronic reactions to harsh lighting, stemming from underlying causes, experiences, and/or specific light sources.1-3 In fact, exposure to many types of light can impact your health significantly and worsen these sensitivities; fluorescent lighting, LEDs, computer and device screens, and sunlight are especially troublesome because they can be particularly high in irritating light between 480-520nm because that’s where those special cells in your eye are most sensitive.4-5

Managing Harsh Light with TheraSpecs

TheraSpecs glasses are specialty tinted to filter the irritating wavelengths present in many common sources of indoor and outdoor light. With a combination of protective lens tints—including FL-41 options that target the part of the spectrum between 480-520nm—and a catalog of stylish and functional frames, TheraSpecs are a versatile tool that may help you navigate various lighting conditions throughout your day.

TheraSpecs customers reported that our FL-Pro glasses were 3x more effective for managing sensitivity to harsh light when compared with other tinted eyewear, including over-the-counter blue light glasses with clear or nearly-clear lenses.6 And our lenses have been frequently recommended by medical professionals like neurologists, light sensitivity specialists, as well as physical and occupational therapists.

Here are the primary lens options we recommend as part of your light management toolkit:

TheraSpecs FL-Pro™ maximizes the filtering power of FL-41 to remove problematic light between 480-520nm and protect you against computer and device screens, fluorescent lighting, LEDs and other artificial sources. As part of a light management plan, we recommend FL-Pro for those living with strong sensitivity to light.

TheraSpecs FL-Blend™ also uses FL-41 and balances filtering of the critical wavelengths between 480-520nm with more natural color perception to provide protection from artificial light sources. We recommend FL-Blend for people living with less severe light sensitivity and/or who are looking for a more subtle lens option.

TheraSpecs FL-Sun™ embraces the benefits of FL-41 by applying the tint to dark, polarized lenses that block more than 93% of the most uncomfortable wavelengths of light. Add FL-Sun to your light management toolkit if you are living with sensitivity to bright sunlight, harsh outdoor glare, and/or if you just want the best sunglasses you’ll ever own.

These TheraSpecs Lenses:

  • Protect you from screens, fluorescent lights, LEDs, and all artificial light (FL-Pro and FL-Blend)
  • Protect you from sunlight and outdoor glare (FL-Sun)
  • Filter problematic light between 480-520nm to support people with different types of light sensitivities
  • May also help people to live well with migraine, as part of an overall light management plan, by managing exposure to these wavelengths
  • Block 100% UVA/UVB light and add anti-glare coating for further protection
