TheraSpecs: Behind the Lens with Sue
Behind the Lens features TheraSpecs’ customers and their journey – what brought them to TheraSpecs and how they find relief from eyestrain, headache, migraine, and overall light sensitivities.
What do you do?
I am an ordained minister in the United Church of Canada, and the pastor of an active congregation in Thunder Bay, Ontario. When I’m not working, I like to spend time at home with my partner, Peter. He lives with MS and spends much of his time in a wheelchair. We have created a home that accommodates both of our needs as much as possible.
What prompted your search for a solution?
My migraines began in September 2005. By late 2008, I felt I had tried almost everything to find relief. I was running out of options and beginning to feel a bit lost. I learned over time to listen to my body, pay attention to triggers, and practice a radical self-care that had been unknown to me previously. I blogged about much of my struggle, which is how I connected with Kerrie and Hart.
How does light impact your day-to-day?
Light is one of my significant triggers. Sound is another, as well as weather changes and some foods. Bright fluorescent lighting has been a real problem for me. In my work environment, I’ve been fortunate to have an office to myself where I use no fluorescent overhead lights at all. However, I often find myself in places such as hospitals and long-term care homes where the lights are very bright. I also find shopping to be difficult for the same reason.
How do TheraSpecs help you?
I have been so pleased with TheraSpecs! I always have them with me. For work, I know I don’t have to cringe when I have an afternoon of hospital visits or meetings in bright places (as an aside, I am so puzzled by the need to put on bright overhead lights in a room with large windows – what’s up with that???). Shopping has become so much easier also. I used to go into a store with a quick “pick up the items and run” tactic in mind, now (on a mild to moderate pain day) I can actually browse.
How would you describe TheraSpecs to a friend?
I would definitely recommend giving them a try. TheraSpecs make a huge difference to me and help me manage my life with migraines.
Do you have any tips for finding relief you might share?
Primarily, I think finding relief is largely about not giving up. When a doctor says, “There’s nothing more I can do,” then it’s time to move on and find someone else who will listen and try to help. My best option has been Botox injections three times a year coupled with triptans for the worst days and the occasional over-the-counter pain medication. But that’s just me – our migraines are as unique as we are.
