As you’ve probably read, TheraSpecs’ co-founders both have migraine. Hart has episodic migraine and I (Kerrie) have chronic migraine that was, until recently, daily. This gives us a unique perspective on migraine specifically, but also on what it’s like to cope with an illness that’s triggered or worsened by light.

In short, it stinks. Light’s pretty much unavoidable and fluorescent light is in nearly every public space and in the homes of most people. On days when my migraine isn’t too bad, I want to run errands and spend time with friends. Before TheraSpecs, doing so would always trigger a migraine (even if I were wearing sunglasses). Wearing TheraSpecs, I can go anywhere I want without getting a migraine.

Combine that with the fact that I’m a writer and wearing TheraSpecs lets me work on a computer without getting a migraine, and you can see why Hart and I are so passionate about making TheraSpecs available to everyone who has symptoms triggered or exacerbated by light.

This first-hand knowledge lets us design eyewear that meets the specific needs of migraineurs. The TheraSpecs tint is vital, but it’s just as important that the frames block as much light as possible in lightweight, comfortable frames. Our experience with allodynia – that annoying migraine symptom that makes touch feel way too intense and even painful – is why we’re sure to test every potential new style during a migraine and reject any that are the slightest bit uncomfortable when our senses are in migraine overdrive.

Because we know how restrictive and life-altering migraine can be, our greatest satisfaction comes from customers telling us that TheraSpecs have reduced their migraine attacks, enabled them to keep working, allowed them do more with their kids, let them return to hobbies, and have, generally, improved their lives.
