"My Brain Has Been Able To Rest and Recover" (Katie’s Story)
Traumatic brain injuries, including concussions, have a long history of causing light sensitivity in those who experience them, and it can affect the short- and long-term recovery process for many. Katie was seeing the negative effects of light exposure after her brain injury in the fall of 2020.
"I sustained a concussion at the end of September 2020 and have been experiencing headaches, confusion, and memory issues since. My progress was slow, as I have had to continue working as a nurse throughout my recovery," she said.
After a few months, she went to see her neurologist about these ongoing symptoms, who noticed that Katie was extremely sensitive to the lights in the clinic. The neurologist shared the science behind how specific wavelengths of blue light can contribute to migraine attacks, photophobia and many of the other symptoms she reported, and then suggested FL-41 tinted glasses to combat this harmful light.
This led Katie to discover TheraSpecs, where she not only enjoyed the variety of frame styles but the availability of options for indoor or outdoor glasses. As she encountered photophobia responses in front of the computer screen and headaches while being outside on sunny days, she knew she needed both types of glasses to stay protected. Side note: she picked up one of our sweet new Quinn frames in grey and looks great in them!
After a bit of apprehension about wearing her new glasses, she settled into the groove and started seeing incredible results. The TheraSpecs tint is so calming to her eyes and brain that she often forgets she is even wearing tinted lenses.
"Not only have the glasses helped me not get headaches while on the computer, I have had no problems with my eyes tiring or having any blurred vision since I started using them! I can go for walks without headaches or being sensitive to the light. My memory issues and confusion have lessened, as well, due to my brain being less 'overloaded' by the light of my computer screen."
Moreover, her post-concussion recovery is starting to turn the corner and has progressed much faster with TheraSpecs in her toolkit.
"My brain has been able to rest and recover more in the three weeks having these glasses than the three months prior," she told us.
If you or someone you love has light sensitivity as the result of a concussion like Katie, we’d love for them to give TheraSpecs a try. Our lenses filter more of the most triggering blue light than other FL-41 and blue light glasses brands, and our non-prescription glasses even come with a 60-day return and exchange policy. That means you can make sure that TheraSpecs work for your symptoms. We think (and hope) you’ll be pleasantly surprised by the improvement!
