Causes and Signs of Eyestrain (aka Computer Vision Syndrome)

Written by Kerrie Smyres on 3rd Mar 2016

When you use your eyes intensely, like while driving or looking at a computer, eyestrain is likely to occur. Computers and devices are often the source of eyestrain, which has prompted the name “computer vision syndrome.” The word syndrome might bring up thoughts of frightening diseases, but don’t fret. Computer vision syndrome really just means your eyes get tired when you work on the computer for long periods. Usually all you need to do is rest your eyes or take measures to make your work environment less taxing on your eyes.

Today we’ll go over the common causes and symptoms of eyestrain. Our next post will describe easy tips you can follow to reduce eyestrain.

Common Causes of Eyestrain

  • Looking at computer or digital device screens (particularly for long periods of time without a break)
  • Intense focus for an extended period of time, like while driving long distances
  • Reading without pauses
  • Exposure to bright light or glare
  • Straining to see in dim light
  • Exposure to air from a fan, heater, or air conditioner
  • Stress or fatigue
  • An underlying eye problem, like dry eye or needing a new glasses prescription

Signs of Eyestrain

  • Tired, sore, burning, and/or itchy eyes
  • Dry or watery eyes
  • Blurry or double vision
  • Difficulty keeping your eyes open
  • Increased light sensitivity
  • Headache
  • Trouble concentrating
  • Sore neck, shoulders or back

Fortunately, simple techniques like resting your eyes periodically, blinking often, keeping your screen clean, reducing glare, and using eye drops can keep eyestrain at bay. We’ll give you specific strategies for managing eyestrain next week.
